EMSA - gel shift

DESCRIPTION:
A gel electrophoresis method for initial determination of DNA-protein interaction at specific DNA regions. EMSA is based on the simple rationale that proteins bound to DNA (eg. Transcription factors) will retard the DNA when migrating in non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel. In presence of a given DNA-binding protein, creation of DNA-protein complex will affect electrophoretic migration in a characteristic manner, usually more slowly than the free DNA. The change or shift in the DNA mobility is visible upon detection.
